This program begins with comprehensive, completely internet delivered education program that allows students to study at their own pace and schedule. It also includes everything needed to become a successful independent travel agent in one convenient program.

The Difference is Independent Agent Options

When opening an independent agency it is important to consider the commission for the products sold. The more work preformed by the agent will qualify them for higher percentage of the net commission. This will vary from 10 - 50% of net commission to 100% of net commission depending on the program.

Successful participants of the -AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVEL Independent Contractor Program will be prepared to maintain and service their own clientele and receive 70 - 95% of the net commission on products sold. This commission structure is only given to qualified and active travel professionals. The -AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVEL Independent Contractor Program is designed for people selling travel as a part-time or full-time career.

This program is not intended for people solely looking for travel discounts on personal travel. This is not a referral program in which you will send your friends and family to a toll free number or web site to have their travel arrangements made.

The break even point for independent agents is typically between $18,000 and $22, 000 in commission able sales annually. This will, on an average of 10% commission, pay you $1,800 to $2,200 a year to cover expenses. Additional sales will start to become income. In addition, to qualify for your IATAN card, the card that allows agents to qualify for special industry only discounts, you will need to work in the industry a minimum of six months or three months upon passing the TAP test (available through TravelCampus).

Recent studies show that individuals who successfully complete a fundamental training program are more quickly successful and earn more than those individuals with little or no training.

It is important to note that the requirements for selling travel differ in each state/province and you should research these with your local department of commerce prior to entering the industry.
